monday.com or Asana: which should you choose?monday.com

Japan pricing, annual billing, excluding tax. If you are buying from Japan, the benchmark is Asana Starter. At the same seat count the yen-priced Asana is cheaper, by ¥140,000 a year at 20 seats. The reason to pick monday.com is not price; it is whether you want to design the fields you track yourself.

The currencies are not even the same

Asana’s Japanese pricing page is in yen, and Starter is ¥1,200 a month for 1 user on annual billing. monday.com shows US dollars even on its Japanese page, and Standard is $12 a month for 1 seat (we could not find a yen price stated on the vendor’s own pages). At $1 = ¥150, 20 seats is ¥288,000 a year against $2,880 a year, a gap of roughly ¥140,000. The two only meet at $1 = ¥100, and the weaker the yen, the more expensive monday.com becomes.

Both are quoted excluding tax. monday.com writes that its prices do not include tax and that tax is set by the billing country, while Asana states that a purchase for business use is subject to Japanese consumption tax (JCT) when the billing address is in Japan. At 20 seats on annual billing, what leaves the account is not ¥288,000 but ¥316,800 including tax.

Seats are not sold 1 at a time

A seat is the right for 1 person to log in to the admin console, and seats are not sold 1 at a time. monday.com starts at a minimum of 3 seats and sells only in seat groups (the vendor’s own example is 5 seats for 4 people). Asana offers 2, 3, 4 and 5 seats, and moves in steps of 5 above that. Whether you are 1 person or 2, monday.com means 3 seats ($9 × 3 × 12 = $324), and Asana starts at 2 seats (¥1,200 × 2 × 12 = ¥28,800).

For 21 people and above, one monday.com support article says "3, 5, 10, 15, 20, 30 seats etc." while another says the plans start at a minimum of 3 seats and then ascend in multiples of 5, so we could not find it stated on the vendor’s own pages whether 25 seats can be selected. Under either wording, 4 seats and 9 seats are not available.

Both are free for up to 2 people. monday.com Free stops at 3 boards and 200 items, while Asana Personal has no limit on tasks or projects. We could not find it stated on either vendor’s own pages what happens to your data when you move from a paid plan back to free.

At 3, 6, 11 and 20 people, how much leaves the account?

Sources: https://asana.com/ja/pricing / https://monday.com/lang/ja/pricing (checked August 2026). All figures are annual billing and are quoted excluding tax. The tax-inclusive Asana column is a reference calculation at Japan’s 10% consumption tax (the statutory standard rate as of August 2026); the rate is not stated by Asana. Yen conversions assume $1 = ¥150 and are indicative.

The formula is the monthly price for 1 seat × seats billed × 12 months. At 6 people both vendors bill 10 seats, so for 1 person it comes to $1,440 ÷ 6 ÷ 12 = $20.00 and ¥144,000 ÷ 6 ÷ 12 = ¥2,000, which is 1.67 times the list price. On monthly billing Asana is ¥1,475 a month for 1 user (1.23 times the annual rate). We could not determine monday.com’s monthly price for 1 seat from its pricing page. Working back from the vendor’s "annual billing saves 18% over monthly", Standard comes to $12 ÷ 0.82 = about $14.6. Check the actual amount on the sign-up screen.

What can you not do on the cheapest paid plan?

An automation rule is a mechanism that runs by itself once you set a condition and an action (for example, emailing the manager on completion); an integration exchanges data automatically with Gmail or Slack; a timeline is a view that lays out work periods as horizontal bars.

The annual cost of 3 seats is $324 against ¥43,200 (¥47,520 including tax), which is practically level, so what that small gap buys you is these 4 features. If you want automation on monday.com, that means Standard ($432 a year).

Who should not choose these?

monday.com is a poor fit for a team of exactly 4 people, and for 1 or 2 people who want a paid contract. You pay for 1 seat, or 3 seats, that nobody uses.

Asana is a poor fit for a team of 3 to 5 people that uses neither automations nor integrations nor timelines, for anyone who wants to design their own fields and run it like a ledger, and for anyone who needs portfolios but cannot stretch to Advanced.

So which should you choose?

  • Up to 2 people — Both are free. Decide once you hit the limits of monday.com Free.
  • 1 or 2 people who need paid features — Asana Starter. You can buy from 2 seats, at ¥28,800 a year (¥31,680 including tax).
  • 3 to 5 people who use neither automations nor integrations nor timelines — monday.com Basic. $324 a year for 3 seats, $540 for 5.
  • 3 to 5 people who need automations or timelines — Asana Starter. monday.com moves you up to Standard.
  • Exactly 4 people — Asana Starter. You can buy exactly 4 seats; monday.com bills 5.
  • 6 to 20 people whose work crosses departments — Asana Starter. 1 task can sit in several projects.
  • 6 to 20 people who want to design their own fields — monday.com Standard. $2,880 a year for 20 seats. It costs ¥140,000 more, but you can line up columns and build a ledger.
  • 21 people and above — We could not confirm the seat increments. Please check the seat counts offered on the sign-up screen.
  • If you cannot decide — Asana Starter. It is cheaper in yen, its seat increments are finer, and automations and timelines are both in the cheapest plan.

Asana amounts are the yen prices on its Japanese pricing page (excluding tax); monday.com amounts are in US dollars even on its Japanese page (excluding tax). Annual billing is quoted as a monthly price for 1 seat, so we multiply by 12, and yen conversions are shown as indicative figures assuming $1 = ¥150.
