What happens if the price goes up after you sign?
Of the 6 products covered on this site, we read the terms of 5 of them clause by clause, leaving out Squarespace. Only 2 have a mechanism that prevents a price rise part-way through a contract term: HubSpot and Semrush. HubSpot writes that it will not increase fees during the Current Term (3.1, with 4 exceptions), and Semrush reaches the same result by tying the effective date of a fee change to the first day of the renewal term (5.3). Just 1 vendor, HubSpot, states explicitly that you may terminate if you do not accept the increase (3.2). Even so, that same HubSpot does not let you cancel part-way through the term and recover what you have prepaid (4.1).
The terms of 5 vendors on 1 page
| Product (document that applies) | Advance notice of an increase | Price held during the term | Deadline and action to stop renewal | Where to check your expiry date | Right to terminate over an increase | How to read this row |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| HubSpot (Customer Terms of Service) | 30 days before renewal (3.2) | Yes, 3.1, with 4 exceptions (going over a limit, upgrading, buying an add-on, a different agreement in the Order Form) | Turn auto-renewal off by the end of the Current Term. No number of days specified (4.2) | Account & Billing in your account | Yes, stated explicitly (3.2) | What is protected is the unit price alone. Going over a limit and upgrading can raise the bill during the term |
| monday.com (Terms of Service) | Only "upon notice". We could not confirm a number of days stated (8.3) | Nothing explicit / 8.9 says the price stays the same unless separately notified | For an annual contract, up to 30 days before expiry. Cancel from account settings, or contact customer success (8.9) | The Billing screen in the admin area | We could not find this stated on the vendor’s own pages | If no notice arrives, the price holds. But since the notice period is not fixed, there is no guarantee you will make the deadline |
| Asana / Subscriber Terms (applies to the customer named in an Order Form) | We could not confirm a number of days stated | Nothing explicit / renewal is at "the then-current rate" (4.4) | Up to 30 days before the renewal date. Notice to the other party is required, and it runs both ways (4.4) | The start date and term are set out in the Order Form | We could not find this stated on the vendor’s own pages | If you have an Order Form, this is your document. It cannot be finished in the admin area; a person has to be notified |
| Asana / Subscriber Agreement (we could not confirm its scope on the vendor’s own pages) | 20 days in advance (4.2) | Nothing explicit | Cancel at any time from account settings in the admin area. No number of days specified (4.4) | The Billing screen in the admin area | We could not find this stated on the vendor’s own pages | The 20-day notice appears in this document alone. The vendor’s own pages do not tell you whether it applies to you |
| Shopify (Terms of Service) | 30 days before a price change, by email or in the admin console (15.2) | Nothing explicit / nothing that limits changes to renewal (15.2) | Cancel at any time. Contact support (14.2). No refunds (5.10) | Settings > Plan in the admin area | We could not find this stated on the vendor’s own pages | The terms allow a change during the term on 30 days’ notice alone |
| Semrush (Terms of Service) | We could not confirm a number of days stated (5.3) | Yes in effect / a change applies from the first day of the renewal term (5.3) | Before the last day of the Current Term. Decline renewal through the designated form (7.2) | The subscription screen in your profile | Yes for material changes to the terms (11.7). We could not confirm anything explicit about fees | Nothing moves during the term, but how far ahead you learn of an increase is not written down |

Terms used here: auto-renewal is the arrangement under which a contract continues automatically for another term of the same length unless you give notice to cancel. Almost every SaaS vendor makes it the default. An Order Form is the document you exchange with a sales representative to settle the amount and the number of seats. It does not exist if you signed up and paid by card yourself, and you can tell by whether a PDF was attached to your sign-up email.
Source: each vendor’s own terms (checked August 2026; document names and last-updated dates are in the sources section at the end). Days are calendar days, and no amounts are stated. The 3 columns on the left answer "will the price go up"; the 3 on the right answer "can you get out" — 2 different questions.
Where is the clause that stops an increase during the term?
What HubSpot 3.1 protects is the unit price alone; go over a limit and the bill rises even during the term. What Semrush 5.3 fixes is only the effective date, the first day of the renewal term. Shopify runs the other way: 15.2 does not limit changes to renewal, and it closes like this.
There is a duty to give 30 days’ notice, but the terms give you no grounds on which to object to an increase. As for what happens to the prepaid balance when a price rises part-way through an annual term, we could not find this stated in the terms or in the help pages. Shopify is not alone in not refunding: the same holds for all 4 vendors we checked (HubSpot 4.1, monday.com 8.3 and 8.9, Shopify 5.10).
Because monday.com 8.3 sets no notice period, a price-increase notice arriving 29 days before expiry would land after the cancellation deadline of 30 days, and the terms do not say how that is handled.
Asana’s legal pages carry 2 contract documents. The Subscriber Terms define themselves as the agreement with the party named as the customer in an Order Form, and state that they apply to new Order Forms taking effect on or after August 10, 2026 and to their renewals. In the 1 remaining document, the Subscriber Agreement, we could not find any statement that it applies to online purchasers, and it is not listed in the document index at asana.com/terms. The 20-day notice (4.2) is a clause of that Subscriber Agreement, but the vendor’s own pages do not let you tell whether it applies to your contract. Ask in writing, before you sign, which contract document applies to you.
Only 1 vendor writes that you can terminate over an increase
HubSpot 3.2 provides that fees may be raised to list price at renewal and that notice is given 30 days before renewal, and then continues:
Because of that 1 final sentence, the 30-day notice and the right to terminate do not necessarily extend to your product. The per-product notice periods are unconfirmed, so open the Product Specific Terms before you sign.
Semrush 11.7 is set entirely in capitals.
11.7 goes on to provide that use on or after that date counts as acceptance of the revision, and that a customer who does not agree to a material change may terminate during the notice period without penalty. The 30-day grace covers material changes alone; everything else takes effect on the day it is posted. Whether a fee change qualifies, and how the word is defined, we could not confirm.
Miss the deadline by 1 day and the next 1 year is fixed
What gets fixed is not the difference but the total for the next 1 year. Running Asana Advanced on 10 seats with annual billing, $24.99 × 10 seats × 12 months = $2,998.80 (per year, excluding tax, US dollars) is locked in whole. Failing to avoid a 10% increase costs $2,998.80 × 0.1 = $299.88, but what you really lose is the chance to choose again how the $2,998.80 is spent. Check the billed amount in your contract.
Moving to monthly billing is an option too. Shopify requires you to contact support before the end of the annual cycle to change from annual to monthly billing (its own help pages); for the others, check before renewal whether the switch can be made in the admin area. Each vendor’s own terms (HubSpot 3.1/3.2/4.2, monday.com 8.3/8.9, Asana 4.4, Shopify 15.2, Semrush 5.3/7.2/11.7), checked August 2026. Days are calendar days
So what should you do?
If you can pay monthly and the service holds no operational data you would miss when you stop, none of the checks above are needed. Stop at the end of the month the increase notice arrives and you lose 1 month.
If you are considering an annual contract and want the unit price protected by a clause during the term, HubSpot is the one. What 3.1 protects is the Current Term, so the longer the term you take, the longer the unit price stays fixed. Going over a limit and upgrading still raise the bill during the term (3.1(i)(ii)), and 4.1 rules out cancelling part-way through and any refund.
If you already hold an annual contract and the next renewal worries you, the thing to open now is the calendar, not the pricing page. Find your expiry date where the table above says to look, and enter 3 dates. (1) 45 days before expiry: the day to start internal approval and negotiation. (2) 30 days before expiry: the cancellation-notice deadline for monday.com (8.9) and for an Asana Order Form contract (Subscriber Terms 4.4). Let it slip by 1 day and the next 1 year is fixed. (3) The day before expiry: the deadline for the Semrush non-renewal form (7.2). HubSpot and the Asana Subscriber Agreement specify no number of days and run to the expiry date, but turning auto-renewal off at (1) is the safer move. You can reverse it before the deadline.
If you cannot decide, pay monthly for the first year. The annual discount is what you are paid for selling 1 year of your freedom to walk away. Move to annual billing in year 2, once you have seen how the service is used, and a price-hold clause such as HubSpot 3.1 starts to work.
Who these products are not for
For a reader who wants the risk of a price rise kept to a minimum, Shopify’s annual billing is not the answer. 15.2 does not limit changes to renewal and allows a change during the term on 30 days’ notice alone, while 5.10 states that there are no refunds. Squarespace’s terms were not examined this time, so it is not part of the assessment here.
